Kieran Trippier has admitted that the footballs at the World Cup feel ‘a little lighter’, and has hinted this could explain England’s struggle with set pieces so far at the tournament.

England’s dead ball prowess was a key part of their run to the semi-finals four years ago, with Trippier scoring a direct free-kick himself in the last four matches against Croatia.

However, the Three Lions were much less effective from set pieces in Qatar, with a number of crosses being skipped in their first two games. Trippier has a theory as to why this may be the case.

Trippier feels this year’s World Cup ball is lighter and could ‘fly away’ if kicked with force

“Every time I’ve passed the ball, I’ve felt the balls were a little bit different, but there’s really no excuses,” Trippier told reporters.

“I would just say the balls are a little different, but it’s not the heat or anything. I feel like it’s a bit lighter.

“It feels like if you put too much force on it, it just flies off. But it’s one of them that we’re dealing with; we all do. We train with the same. It’s a football, isn’t it?’

Trippier isn’t the only player who seems to have had issues on the ball, known as the Al Rihla, with set-piece deliveries proving inconsistent throughout the competition, while also scoring few goals from long range. Even Lionel Messi had problems with a couple of free kicks in promising positions far over the crossbar.

It is not the first time that the World Cup ball has been criticized. The 2010 World Cup in South Africa featured the Jabulani ball, which players claimed would move in the air, making it difficult to control.

Trippier has insisted England can bounce back to reach new levels after their draw with the US

Trippier knows England must learn to handle this year’s ball if they are to fulfill their dream of winning the World Cup for the first time in 56 years.

The team was booed off the field on Friday after their uneventful 0-0 draw with USA, but will have a chance to put things right by beating Wales on Tuesday night to secure first place in Group B.

The 32-year-old has no problem with fans and pundits venting their frustrations after the US game, but expects England to bounce back and perform much better on their next outing.

“They are opinions and everyone is entitled to them,” Trippier said when asked about the criticism from outside influences.

‘We know what to do. We know we can go up a few more levels. They’re all behind us, they all want us to do well.”
