Jasprit Bumrah, who was injured ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, picked up veteran pacer Mohammed Shami in the men’s squad last month. The right-arm pacer, who was a sensation with budding franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2022, was not happy after his non-selection in the World Cup squad, revealed his coach Mohammad Badruddin. With many cricket fans across the globe, everyone saw how Shami celebrated his wickets during the World Cup, be it the wicket of Pakistan’s Iftikhar Ahmed or Bangladesh’s Najmul Shanto, Shami had a huge roar that made his debut. Talking about personal struggles, Shami played an average tournament in the T20 World Cup 2021 just like most of India’s players. However, he returned with a stellar season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and was later given a chance to make a comeback in India’s T20I squad. Unfortunately, he tested positive for Covid-19 and was passed out. All that fuss made him ineligible for 2022 World Cup selection until Jasprit Bumrah got injured.

How did Shami prepare for his comeback?

“We put around ten wet balls and he used to bowl non-stop. The wet ball is difficult to catch, this is where skill comes in handy. Shami must bowl an average of a hundred odd balls daily to perfect his craft Now look, he is doing well in that too,” reveals his coach, coach Badruddin told The Indian Express.

Shami’s practice with the wet balls showed his value when rain interrupted the India vs Bangladesh clash and he was right to dismiss Bangladesh’s Shanto after play resumed in Adelaide.

“He had high hopes that he would be selected because the T20 World Cup was in Australia. Those pitches suited his bowling. He was upset when he was not selected but never showed up. He played in the NCA or stayed here, or here. His farm is working hard on the pitch. I’ll tell him it’s my gut feeling that he’ll play the World Cup; he’ll blush and keep quiet. Look, he’s playing now!” said his coach.

What next for Team India and Shami?

Rohit Sharma and co will have their task cutout on Sunday (November 6) in their last Super 12 clash of the T20 World Cup 2022 against Zimbabwe. If India loses, they will be in danger of being knocked out of the tournament. Rohit Sharma’s men will have to ensure that their campaign is on track. Zimbabwe, not to be forgotten, had been upset after beating Babar Azam’s Pakistan earlier in the tournament. However, the Men in Green got a new chance in the tournament with a big win over South Africa. They have a healthy NRR and based on that they can rule out South Africa or India, if other results are in their favour.
