Manchester United ‘face competition from Real Madrid’ for £50 million Holland hotshot Cody Gakpo as they look for a new striker.

PSV Eindhoven star Gakpo, 23, impressed at the World Cup with three goals in five games as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals.

United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly made Gakpo his number 1 transfer target after considering a flight for him in the summer.

United manager Erik ten Hag would like to add another option to his attacking line in January

After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ten Hag believes that an additional attacking option is needed, as Gakpo is primarily a left winger for PSV, but a center forward for his country.

however, the Daily Mirror report that United would face stiff competition from Newcastle and also Real Madrid, who have increased their interest since Gakpo’s World Cup appearances.

Gakpo came within hours of joining Leeds United in the summer before PSV pulled the plug on the deal.

He has since scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in all competitions for PSV, with football director Marcel Brands admitting this week that Gakpo could be sold in January.

The 23-year-old Gakpo showed his qualities by scoring three times during the group stage in Qatar

However, PSV are likely to demand a heavy price for Gakpo’s loss, with compensation of at least £50 million.

Brands said this in the talk show of the PSV supporters club Eternal loyalty: ‘You have to be realistic. When you talk about Cody Gakpo and the price tag, how many clubs can a player of that caliber buy?

“You’re talking about maybe 10 or 12 clubs in Europe. You need to need a player in that position and be able and willing to spend the money in January, which is normally less hectic than the summer.

“We have yet to see if it all happens. He has no clause or anything like that and no amount has been agreed.

‘The agreements made were there before my time. No amounts have been discussed, but if the right club comes along that Cody would like to join.

“It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway. Then you know which way to go.’

Man United are also reportedly interested in Portuguese star Goncalo Ramos, who could again replace Ronaldo.

The club will launch an investigation into Benfica over Ramos in January.
