England’s bowlers finally made their breakthrough on the third morning of the first Test, including a first wicket for Will Jacks – but not before Pakistan’s openers each added to the burgeoning tally of hundreds.
At lunchtime, after Jack Leach had knocked out Azhar Ali in the first over with the second new ball, Pakistan had 298 for three, still trailing by 359. At least England had broken open a door that threatened to slam shut.
Before that, when the Rawalpindi pitch steadfastly refused to change character from the surface that had produced 838 runs in the first two days, Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq extended their partnership from 181 overnight to 225 – the highest in Pakistan for the first wicket. against England.

Imam-ul-Haq also went to see three figures in the morning session in Rawalpindi
For the first time in Test history, both teams had enjoyed an opening of two centuries in their first innings – a comment, more than anything, on the pitch.
If Ben Stokes’ bowlers had reasoned to wonder where a wicket would come from, the answer was given by Jacks. Twelve mostly innocent overs on the second day had come to nothing for 50, and his fifth ball of the morning – short and broad – promised little.
Instead, Shafique – on 114 – managed a cut, which was well held by Ollie Pope behind the stumps, and England were on the board.
Moments after drinking, they doubled their numbers, as Imam lifted Jack Leach to Long-On, where Ollie Robinson kicked back and held: 245 for two, with Imam out for 121 – the game’s sixth hundred, all in seven sessions.

For a slowly growing crowd, this wasn’t necessarily bad news, and cheers immediately went up for the arrival of Babar Azam, the Pakistani captain and batting glamor boy. From his fifth ball on, he forced Leach off the back foot between midwicket and mid-on. Babar was going on.
A morning started 15 minutes early in an attempt to make up overs lost to poor light has been dominated by spins so far. But after Joe Root rubbed the ball across Leach’s bald brow looking for sweat and thus a reverse swing, Stokes brought in Robinson and shortly after that Jimmy Anderson.
Looking particularly menacing, Anderson might have let Azhar catch leg slip on 17 by Zak Crawley, only to have the ball burst through his fingers as he dove low to the left.
With Anderson finally finding a little bit of back, it seemed unclear why Stokes would not get the new ball until 10 minutes before lunch. Stokes clearly knew better.
Leach got his fifth pitch to right and, after what felt like an eternity, referee Ahsan Raza agreed to his appeal. Azhar’s inevitable call-up yielded only three reds: the ball had straightened a fraction on the pitch and England were a bastard.
